Grandma’s Holiday Bread Machine Sweet Bread

This is the recipe for my Grandma’s sweet bread, and let me tell you, it was usually my favorite part of family gatherings at her house. Every Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, birthday, or get-together at her house featured this bread and it is just a taste of home for me.

This recipe is designed for a 1 lb bread machine, so it’ll work in any machine, and can easily be scaled up for a larger loaf.

Equipment

  • Bread Machine

Ingredients

1 lb (500g) loaf – RECOMMENDED

  • ¾ cup + 2 Tbsp water lukewarm
  • 1 egg whisked
  • 300 g bread flour
  • 5 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 ½ Tbsp powdered dry milk
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ Tbsp butter unsalted
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp orange extract optional

2 lb (1000g) loaf

  • cup water lukewarm
  • 2 eggs whisked
  • 600 g bread flour
  • 10 Tbsp sugar (½ cup plus 2 Tbsp)
  • 3 Tbsp powdered dry milk
  • tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp butter unsalted
  • 4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp orange extract optional

Instructions

  • Add the ingredients into the baking pan of your bread machine in the order listed.
  • Select a Soft mode on your bread machine.
  • Depending on your bread machine, it will likely run this bread mode for approximately 3 hours.
  • Once the bread machine run is complete, gently remove the loaf and allow it to cool before slicing.

Notes

  • To use this recipe in larger bread machines, multiple the ingredients accordingly. For 1 1/2 pound bread machines (standard) multiple the ingredients by 1.5. For a 2 pound bread machine, multiple the ingredients by 2.
  • While most bread machine recipes I believe can be replicated without a bread machine, this one is particularly difficult to do so, as the dough is almost like a batter, it is particularly liquid-y. I would recommend, if you are to attempt it, to mix all ingredients, pour into your baking pan, and ‘knead’ (mix) and let rise within that container.
